The Science of Ergothioneine
Ergothioneine is a naturally occurring amino acid derivative, sometimes referred to as the “longevity vitamin.” It is actively transported in the body via the OCTN1 transporter and concentrated in tissues prone to oxidative stress.
Why This Nutrient Matters
Many people think of nutrition as macros, essential vitamins, and minerals, but science is increasingly recognizing that other diet-derived nutrients may also shape long-term healthspan.
Ergothioneine is one example. Found primarily in mushrooms, humans can’t synthesize it yet the body uses a dedicated transporter (OCTN1/ETT) to move it into tissues and retain it, suggesting biological importance.
Emerging research suggests that not getting enough ergothioneine may be linked to higher risk of age-related outcomes.
An Underappreciated Gap in Modern Diets
In the U.S., dietary patterns tend to be low in mushrooms, which likely means many people have lower ergothioneine intake than they realize. This matters because population-level research has reported that lower estimated ergothioneine intake is associated with higher risk of mortality, including deaths linked to neurodegenerative disease categories.
These findings don’t prove cause-and-effect but they do present the case that ergothioneine may be an underappreciated dietary factor worth taking seriously, and worth studying with more clinical trials.
